Ten Things to Look for When Choosing a Uni
I have been at university for five weeks now and my brother is starting to look where he will go in a couple of years time, so I have come up with a checklist of what to look for and thought it might be helpful for some of the people who read this blog.
- The course. This is so important! You have to study this subject for 3 years and you'll have an average of £50,000 debt to show for it so you better enjoy it.
- The distance from home. If you are a person who gets homesick being 5 hours away is going to make you unhappy and increase your chances of dropping out, so stay reasonably local!
- The city it's in. Some cities are beautiful, some are quiet, some have a great nightlife, some are great for shopping. Choose a place that's right for you.
- The extra curricular activities on offer. If you are a rugby player for example, you want to be at a uni with a rugby club/society. It's a great way to make friends and take a break from work now and then.
- Accommodation. You want to know where you'll be living after all.
- The library facilities available! You'll be spending a lot of time there, you want them to be good.
- Student satisfaction ratings. This will be a huge indication on how happy most students are with the uni and chances are you will feel the same as they do.
- Student perks. Some universities give you free bus passes or specific job opportunities or 24hr security. These things may be important to you, so check them out.
- Cost of living! Your student loan will only go so far...
- Your gut feeling. This is the most important thing to think about when you visit a uni, because 9/10 times it will be right!
Good luck in your searches!
