Ten Things to Look for When Choosing a Uni

I have been at university for five weeks now and my brother is starting to look where he will go in a couple of years time, so I have come up with a checklist of what to look for and thought it might be helpful for some of the people who read this blog.

  1. The course. This is so important! You have to study this subject for 3 years and you'll have an average of £50,000 debt to show for it so you better enjoy it.
  2. The distance from home. If you are a person who gets homesick being 5 hours away is going to make you unhappy and increase your chances of dropping out, so stay reasonably local!
  3. The city it's in. Some cities are beautiful, some are quiet, some have a great nightlife, some are great for shopping. Choose a place that's right for you.
  4. The extra curricular activities on offer. If you are a rugby player for example, you want to be at a uni with a rugby club/society. It's a great way to make friends and take a break from work now and then.
  5. Accommodation. You want to know where you'll be living after all.
  6. The library facilities available! You'll be spending a lot of time there, you want them to be good.
  7. Student satisfaction ratings. This will be a huge indication on how happy most students are with the uni and chances are you will feel the same as they do.
  8. Student perks. Some universities give you free bus passes or specific job opportunities or 24hr security. These things may be important to you, so check them out.
  9. Cost of living! Your student loan will only go so far...
  10. Your gut feeling. This is the most important thing to think about when you visit a uni, because 9/10 times it will be right!
Good luck in your searches!
